2012 celebrates 80 years since the founding of what is today The LEGO Group. Started in the workshop of carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen in 1932, the company has grown rapidly over the past few decades, transforming from a small manufacturer of wooden toys, to a producer of the more familiar acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic bricks that we see today. LEGO started out in the small town of Billund, Denmark, but now has operations in over 130 countries and has grown to become the 3rd largest manufacturer of toys in the world. Despite all this change over the last 80 years, the company has maintained the same motto: Det bedste er ikke for godt, which loosely translates into English from Danish as: the best is never too good.
A film has also been produced by LEGO that showcases the growth and development of the company from 1932 to 1968. Spanning just 17 minutes, the film offers decades of history in a visually appealing format making it a convenient option to absorb the story of the worlds most popular interlocking plastic brick.
